character information
name: Nico di Angelo
canon: Camp Halfblood Chronicles (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, The Heroes of Olympus, and The Trials of Apollo)
canon point: between Heroes and Trials, before he starts dating Will Solace
age:

This is tricky. Nico was born in the late 30s but was placed in the "Lotus Hotel" where he lived, without aging, for approximately 70 years (an actual date is not given). When he emerges, he's appears roughly 10/11 years old and with no memory of his birthday, so by the end of Heroes of Olympus and before Trials of Apollo (which is some 5-6 years later), he is about 15/16 (plus or minus those 70 years). It should be noted that while Rick Riodan has said that Nico is about 15 on his instagram, his math and timelines have been off before. It should also be noted that Nico has been described as an "old soul" (being one of the most mature characters of the cast), "a boy out of time," and said to have some memories of his time before being put in the Lotus Hotel. This would make Nico about 86 87 years old (give or take a year) with the appearance of a 16-year-old 17-year-old. For the purposes of [community profile] riverview, Nico is considered under-18.

(canon) background: nico's fandom wiki, nico on wikipedia

abilities:

›› ADHD → this is something all demigods are known to have, giving Nico innate battle prowess, supernatural battle reflexes, and an ability to quickly analyze fighting styles
›› Dyslexia → Nico's brain is hardwired to read/write Ancient Greek instead of modern languages.
›› Fighting skills → Nico has been in many battles, always shown fighting with his Stygnian iron sword. He's fought against gods and monsters, often coming out with little to no wounds. He has been said to train with the dead, notable figures like Achilles and Hector.
›› Mythomagic → this is a card game much like Magic: The Gathering but features Greek gods and monsters. Nico is well versed in the game, allowing him knowledge on monsters, gods, and their abilities. It has also given him the skill to strategize, making him an adept leader if necessary (though he prefers to stick to the background).
›› Languages → Aside from English, Nico can speak Ancient Greek, Italian (his birth language), and Latin.
›› Will Power/Endurance → Nico is shown to withstand intense amounts of pain and tragedy as he was able to travel through Tartarus alone without going mad, which for a child of Hades, would have been like staring into the true face of evil itself. Furthermore, he overcomes a lot of injuries inflicted on him during Heroes of Olympus but still manages to haul a 40ft ivory statue half way across the world.
›› Geokinesis → Nico can control the earth, giving him the ability to raise rocks and stone, cause earthquakes enough to destroy buildings, as well as create large fissures in the ground. His skill isn't as strong as his half-sister Hazel's, but it's been shown to be enough to cause significant damage when needed.
›› Necromancy → Obviously, as the son of the Death God, Nico is capable of raising the dead. Sometimes in the forms of zombies, ghosts, and skeletons. He is able to raise a large amount, creating whole squadrons of undead soldiers when necessary. He can also speak to the dead telepathically, release souls of the living, and determine if a person is near death (either due to a ringing in his ears or by sensing their aura). Other death-related skills include both being able to sense when immortals are fading/dying and knowing almost instinctively when and how a person's soul is being judged in the Underworld. Finally, as the Ghost King, he can physically manipulate ghosts, control their actions, and even reduce living people (including other demigods) into ghosts and banish them to the Underworld.
›› Fear Aura → Like his father, Nico can generate an intense aura of fear and death around him. This strengthens depending on his mood. The angrier or more upset he is, the stronger this aura becomes. Sometimes, it can even cause an intense cold to spread around him, making frost form or killing off plants around his feet.
›› Death Trance → Though not likely to come up in game, Nico has the ability to put himself in a trance by eating seeds of pomegranates from Persephone's garden in the Underworld. This trance allows him to survive without air, food, or water aside from the seeds which can only be consumed by children of Hades.
›› Osteokinesis → Nico can raise and manipulate bones in order to use as weapons or create cages around enemies.
›› Umbrakinesis → Nico is frequently shown manipulating darkness and shadows, drawing them around himself or dissipating them. He can "shoot" bolts of darkness and create clouds of pitch-black darkness with which he can surround his enemies. Other forms of manipulation allow him to create shields or using shadows to heal minor wounds. He sometimes even travels vast distances by jumping between shadows (this is known as Shadow Traveling). However, the farther he travels and the more people he takes with him, the more tired he becomes. If he shadow travels too often and exerts himself too much, he could potentially slip into a shadow coma or even disappear entirely.
›› Hypnokinesis → Though not as effectively as children of Hypnos, Nico can sometimes travel through dreams or force people to sleep with deep dreams. He sleeps deeply as well, using sleep to heal and regain energy after using his powers.
›› Healing Rate → Like all demigods, Nico heals faster than most mortals, especially when given demigod type first aid such as eating Ambrosia (the food of the gods) or drinking Nectar (the drink of the gods).

strengths:

Nico is exceptionally brave. He has lived on his own since the death of his sister, fending for himself despite being ten years old at the time. Nico is also extremely resourceful, something he's had to learn to be in order to survive as a very young demigod, without assistance despite how dangerous being a demigod can be. He withstood the indescribable horrors of Tartarus while still maintaining his sanity.

Nico is stubborn, which is a strength because it means he refuses to back down or give in, regardless of how painful or overwhelming a situation might be. At the age of about 13, he was able to confront his own father, Hades (the god of the Underworld) and convince the god to help fight for a side that Hades had been avoiding for decades. While traveling through Tartarus, he confronted the goddess of misery who actually complimented him on how miserable he was. And yet, he never gave up on living, never gave up on life.

Other strengths include a strong sense of loyalty (largely to the Greeks, his sister Hazel, and especially Percy Jackson). And though he often comes across as creepy or gloomy, Nico is genuinely kind. According to the goddess Hestia, he was the first to talk to her in a long period of time.

Finally, Nico is intelligent. While nowhere as smart as Annabeth, the daughter of Athena, Nico is still clever enough to come up with an elaborate plan to ensure his crush, Percy Jackson, could save the world during the Titan War. He is also well versed in Greek myths, types of monsters, and battle strategies.

weaknesses:

Nico's primary weakness is addressed rather clearly in the series. All demigods tend to have a fatal flaw, or a personal/mental weakness that if not countered can lead to their death. In Nico's case, his fatal flaw is holding grudges, something he shares with his father and his sister, Bianca. For a long time, Nico was resentful of Percy (partially because he could not accept his romantic feelings for Percy and partially because Percy was not able to protect Bianca). It is only after his deceased sister's spirit coaches him to let go of his anger that he is able to forgive Percy.

Other weaknesses often stem from Nico's fatal flaw. His tendency towards being brooding, gloomy, and quick to anger are often because he holds a grudge against himself. For many years, Nico hated himself because of who he was as a demigod son of Hades, and also because Nico felt that being gay was something shameful and hated. This impacted how he viewed the world, making him believe that he would never be accepted. This was true until only recently in the series, after other demigods prove to Nico that he is accepted and that a lot of his assumptions about being unwanted had been misconceptions.

Lastly, Nico can be very unpredictable. He keeps a lot of his thoughts close to the chest and if necessary, is not above harming others if they threaten people he cares about. He's not above killing other demigods or even stepping aside to allow others to do the job. Nico can be very volatile and dangerous when angry, which can sometimes lead to him overusing his powers or pushing himself beyond his limits.
