Name: Mikaela (Shindo) Hyakuya Door: door pass (dominant) Canon: Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End) Canon Point: ch. 90, after he confesses being in love with Yuu, but before he turns into a demon. Age: immortally 16 Appearance: he's the blond with red eyes. History: fandom wiki, wikiPersonality: As deuteragonist of Owari no Seraph, Mikaela Hyakuya acts as a crucial role to the series, both as only living family member and foil to protagonist Yuuichiro Hyakuya. Even as Yuu goes through his character development, Mika (a nickname he's often called) goes through one as well, always mirroring Yuu in some respects.
It begins at Hyakuya Orphanage where Mika is the first person to welcome the newly orphaned Yuu. It's here we see that Mika is a cheerful, optimistic, and happy boy; all too eager to adopt an embittered and jaded Yuu to the small family. He instantly dubs the new boy "Yuu-chan" and keeps this name for Yuu even as they become young adults. Despite Yuu's reluctance and recalcitrance, even as they grow up and are taken as "livestock" by vampires, Mika continues to insist they are family. While Yuu remains an angry boy during this time, hateful of the vampires, Mika remains hopeful, always there to tease and encourage Yuu in matters of family. He has a deep faith in Yuu, and this faith is so strong, it drives Mika to steal a map and pistol from a vampire noble so that together, with the other Hyakuya Orphanage children, they can escape.
Even at this time, we see that Mika is one who often sacrifices himself for those he loves. Mika shoulders the burden of feeding the family by offering himself up to the vampire noble on an almost nightly basis. And whenever Yuu insists he has no family, Mika is there to counter that they are. This all comes to a head during their attempted escape from Sanguinem. Caught by the same vampire noble that Mika had stolen the map and pistol from, neither Mika nor Yuu are able to stop the vampire as their family is slaughtered before their eyes. With only the two of them left, Mika wants nothing but Yuu's happiness and once more sacrifices himself for Yuu's sake. He demonstrates courage in rushing the vampire and as a result, he's mortally wounded in the process. This gives Yuu the chance to shoot the vampire in the head, momentarily "killing" him. Mika then urges Yuu to flee despite arguments otherwise. In the end, Mika is left to die with a smile on his face because, for the first time, Yuu called them "family".
Mika doesn't die, however, though it's certainly a close call. But the happy, smiling boy disappears along with his humanity as he's soon turned into one of the vampires he and Yuu had so often hated. Over the years, as Yuu learns to become more open and friendly, even forming a new family, Mika remains isolated, growing ever more bitter and angry against both humans and vampires. Caught somewhere in between due to his refusal to drink human blood (he subsists on the blood of vampire queen Krul Tepes instead), he has love for neither, believing both are corrupt, greedy, and in the case of humans, frail. This is because, as time passes, he's confronted with some of humanity's worst, seeing the failed experiments conducted on seraphs like him and Yuu (these "seraphs" being human children with a specific gene that, when activated, turns them into wrathful angel-like creatures). Not only does this starkly color his perceptions of humans, but the news that Yuu is taken in by a group known for such experiments only succeeds in making his hatred for humans stronger.
Regardless of his feelings for humanity, Mika maintains a strong desire to protect, even if it's only the one human left of the Hyakuya Orphanage—Yuu. It soon becomes Mika's one and only drive, his obsession: to find Yuu among the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and "rescue" him from it. For a long time, he believes the new "family" that Yuu has adopted, the Shinoa Squad, is only using him and it takes being saved by that "family" to change his mind. Still, he hardly trusts them, but stands with them and fights his own vampire comrades for Yuu's sake. At one point, he even allows a crazed Yuu to stab him in order to protect Shinoa Hiiragi, though he claims it's not for her sake. Mika wants nothing more than for Yuu to run away with him, leave everything behind, so that they can be together again and so that Yuu remains safe from the experiments run by a faction of the JIDA. However, at Yuu's insistence that the Shinoa Squad are family too, he relents enough to be drawn into the group.
Unfortunately, this singular focus becomes something of remark among the vampires he serves. Teased frequently by the same vampire noble that slaughtered his family, Mika gradually becomes someone who keeps his feelings and thoughts to himself. He goes about his "missions" with a disdain towards others, never letting anyone close or in on his intentions save for the few who already know. This leads to a reputation of apathy and arrogance, as Mika's tendency to shoulder missions on his own or to battle others by himself suggests an overwhelming belief in his own abilities. He has little interest in glory, though. And while Mika is certainly strong, agile, and as pointed out by one vampire, "overwhelmingly powerful", his behavior is quite often a façade hiding many insecurities.
Having been turned vampire by Krul Tepes, but refusing human blood for so long, Mika is caught somewhere between being human and vampire for many years. This often causes a warring of feelings within him that he hides behind his apathetic expressions. He greatly fears turning into the kind of monster by which his family was killed and even worse, becoming one of the very creatures Yuu hated so much. He hates himself for letting his family die and at one point refers to himself as another "ugly bloodsucker." When facing Yuu for the first time after being turned, Mika cannot bring himself to admit he's no longer human, much less look Yuu in the eyes. His fear is so strong, he refuses human blood almost to the last minute, when he is all but dying, despite many moments when the blood he needs is offered to him. It's only when Yuu, someone he's acknowledged as having grown more open, friendly, and even naïve, offers his own blood and insists that Mika lives that Mika gives in. Once turned, Mika expresses regret at no longer being human. It's his faith in Yuu, having never been lost, that allows him to accept who he is until Yuu finds a way to turn him human again.
Of course, when reunited once more and in a point in the series where they must stand together, some of that old Mika peeks through. He openly cries in Yuu's presence, when it's just the two of them. Small, teasing comments are made as well. But due to the dangers they face, he remains stern even around the now more lighthearted Yuu.
Through it all, Mika proves to be highly intelligent and clever. Even as a child in the vampires' city, Mika was bright enough to make use of their surroundings and even manage to find the items he believed would secure his family's escape. As an older teen, Mika shows an aptitude for reading battlefields or sometimes humans, allowing him to dupe fellow vampires or make efficient plans. This is possibly due to his being a pet of the Krul Tepes, someone the clever queen counts on to carry out a plan told only to him. Whether this intelligence extends to book knowledge is questionable, however. After his years spent in Sanguinem, Yuu proves to have difficulty reading owing to the lack of proper education. It's quite likely that due to his prolonged stay there, totaling eight years, Mika might be the same. But given he was able to find a map and a pistol in the vampire noble's large mansion, this might not be the case. Powers and Abilities: As a full, noble vampire who was turned by a high ranking progenitor, Mikaela is exceptionally strong for his age. Such strength usually only occurs in much older vampires, and Mika has only been an incomplete vampire for four years. And yet he is able to go toe to toe with those considered to be extremely strong. Now that he is a full vampire, his strength and speed are increased, making him a very formidable foe.
He has enhanced senses such as hearing, smelling, and vision. He's able to run extraordinarily fast and often dodge some of the most dangerous attacks. His vampiric strength also gives him an ability to jump to and from high places, landing without damage. He heals fast, provided he hasn't been struck by an anti-vampire curse.
Mika is also a skilled swordsman. Unlike most vampires at his level, he is able to use what's called a "first class armament", a type of sword usually reserved for the high ranking vampire progenitors. This sword, when activated by the words "Drink my blood," extends vine-like appendages out of the hilt. These vines wrap around Mika's hand and arm, pulling blood from him and granting him extra strength and speed. He's also able to unleash a dangerous blast wave by swinging his sword in a horizontal arc, blasting enemies away from him.
